Key Terminology
Ace
A serve that lands in the opponent's court untouched, or is touched but not kept in play — immediate point.
Dig
A defensive move where a player dives or reaches to keep a hard-driven ball off the floor.
Spike
An attacking hit where the player jumps and strikes the ball downward over the net with force.
Block
A defensive play at the net where front-row players jump to deflect an opponent's attack. Does not count as a team touch.
Set
An overhead pass (usually the second touch) that positions the ball for an attacker. Delivered with fingertips above the forehead.
Pipe
A back-row attack from position 6 (middle-back), jumping from behind the 3-meter line.
Quick / One
A fast set to the middle blocker where the attacker is already in the air. Designed to beat the block.
Float Serve
A serve with minimal spin so the ball moves unpredictably in the air — hard to pass cleanly.
Jump Serve
A powerful topspin serve where the player tosses, jumps, and hits — like a spike from the baseline.
Double Contact
A fault where a player touches the ball twice in succession, or different body parts in separate motions. First team contact is exempt.
